| Deer Creek Walkers is located in
scenic Wood County, in northeast Texas. Like
much of East Texas we enjoy small, rolling
hills and beautiful pine and hardwood trees.
The big Texas sky makes for some spectacular
sunsets and we love where we live! |

 |
| Our first gaited horse was a big
spotted saddle horse mare, Dusty, whose good
nature and gait convinced us that gaited
horses had more to offer than any other.
Dusty raised two nice Spotted Saddle Horse
foals for us and our interest in gaited
horses continued to grow. |
|
| We officially began raising Tennessee
Walking Horses in 1997 with the
encouragement and support of our friends,
Philip and Mary Stephens. Their guidance has
been invaluable and we are so grateful to
them for being such wonderful friends and
mentors to us. |

| Chuck and I share equal enthusiasm
for our horses and we enjoy focusing our
efforts on raising and training foals. We
use natural horsemanship training methods
will all the horses. We are well aware there
is no substitute for hours spent with the
foals, and our entire family pitches in to
provide this. |

 |
| Long walks over brick walks, tarps,
rustling leaves, oil top, concrete, gravel,
mud, creeks and ravines are all part of the
training that our foals receive. Our
neighbors are accustomed to seeing the four
of us walking down the road, single file,
each with a foal. Often we are headed to a
heavily wooded section of our pasture. Our
foals are thoroughly exposed to traffic,
ravines, creeks, thick brush and vines,
obstacles, barking dogs, and all of our farm
animals. |

 |
 |
In addition to the horses, we also
have chickens, pheasants, peafowl, guineas,
dogs, cats, and longhorn cattle. The
exposure to these animals is invaluable in
raising our foals. You can't just can't beat
having them around for desensitizing the
babies.
Our foals are handled from birth and good
manners instilled early to help
ensure safe handling by youth exhibitors as
well as novice adults.
FOAL CARE FAQS |
|
|
"Riding a horse is not a
gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a
game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. It seizes
a person whole and, once it has done so, he will
have to accept that his life will be radically
changed." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
